Exploring the Abandoned Whit Roy Mercury Mine by Drone

We had the opportunity to drive out into the desert in the Big Bend Ranch State Park for the annual Big Bend Ultra Marathon. One of the check points, Bravo, was within line of sight of 2 abandoned mines. This mine, the Whit-Roy mine, was mining a mineral called Cinnabar that was refined by heat into a liquid metal called Quicksilver or Mercury. Mercury was a key ingredient in detonators used by the US Military in World War II and the Korean War. It was very hazardous to humans, but they didn't know about that back in 1935 when they started mining and refining it. The mine was closed and abandoned in 1973, with all of the equipment left on site to rust.
