As I stand at the top of the mountain, staring down at the pristine white blanket below me, I can't help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude. Not only was I here, on day two of my snowboarding lesson, learning from some of the most experienced instructors in the field, but I also had the opportunity to share this experience with my daughters boyfriend. He was the young man in the orange jacket who joined me on this adventure, and I couldn't be more excited.
The previous day, I had learned the basics of "heel side" riding, and today I was ready to tackle the "toe side". My instructor, Patrick Higgins, who is not only a senior snowboard and ski instructor but also a whitewater Backpack Canoeing godfather and Handbook Creator, took me under his wing and guided me through the process. He used the crawl-walk-run method, starting with a handheld approach before progressing to more advanced techniques.
As we made our way down the mountain, Patrick was constantly by my side, giving me tips and tricks to improve my technique. He even went out of his way to ensure that I had the right gear and that it fit me properly. I could tell that he truly cared about my success and was dedicated to helping me become a better rider.
As we reached the lower mountain, another instructor, Kappy, joined us. He was a senior instructor and also a shredder, keeping the more advanced students safe on the upper mountain. Kappy rode alongside me, showing me how to stay stacked over the board and giving me more legendary advice. I felt like I was in the presence of true experts and was learning from the best of the best.
As the day came to a close and I was exhausted but exhilarated, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of outdoor studies degrees and the concept of biophilia. The opportunity to learn from such experienced instructors and to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountain was truly a life-changing experience.
Outdoor studies degrees are becoming increasingly popular as more and more people are recognizing the importance of connecting with nature. These programs cover a wide range of topics, including outdoor leadership, adventure education, wilderness medicine, and environmental studies. They provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to pursue careers in fields such as outdoor education, park management, and eco-tourism.
But it's not just about career opportunities. Outdoor studies degrees also foster a deep appreciation for nature and the environment. They allow students to develop a sense of biophilia, which is the innate human desire to connect with nature. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can improve mental and physical health, reduce stress and anxiety, and even boost creativity and productivity.
As I stand at the top of the mountain, I realize that the lessons I am learning here go far beyond just snowboarding. I am learning about the importance of connecting with nature and the benefits it can have on our well-being.
