s you have probably noticed, so much of our economy today is dominated by just a handful of companies or what some would term monopolies. Mastercard and Visa process the vast majority of credit card transactions. CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens control 99% of America’s drug stores. AT&T, Verizon & T-Mobile control the entire telecommunications industry. Delta, United, American, and Southwest control almost all airline travel in the United States. The list goes on and on.

Yet, it is in the world of Big Tech where we see the most powerful monopolies. For instance, Google controls 90 percent of all search traffic on the Internet, and Amazon is responsible for the majority of online retail sales in the United States.

But America wasn’t always like this. Congress passed the Sherman Anti-Trust Act in 1890. Over the next several decades, the federal government used the powers granted by this act to break up companies with a fraction of the market size and influence of today’s tech titans. Ashton explains
