Whether in memes or cute video clips shared on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, cats are among the Internet’s favourite animals. According to Buzzfeed, the most popular cat posts get almost four times the traffic of the most-clicked dogs. What’s the reason behind this feline phenomenon?

One of the first cat videos to go viral dates back to May 2006. Titled “Puppy Vs Cat”, this YouTube video has since racked up over 16 million views. While dogs have evolved over centuries to develop facial muscles to help communicate better with humans, cats are still much harder to read.

As a result of their poker-faced expressions, we tend to anthropomorphise or project our emotions onto what video curator Will Braden called the perfect “blank slate”. D-Jin of SGAG gathers that this happens in order to have us feel closer to these animals.

Anthropomorphise is exactly what Will did in 2012, when he filmed his cat Henri in black and white and dubbed French lines over his expressions. His noir video, titled Henri 2, Paw de Deux, went viral and has received over 10 million views to date. Will attributes the success of his video to Henri’s blank slate expression and his easy going personality
