Near Death Experience in Ancient Egypt

When I was doing my first degree in Egyptian archeology, I was reading afterlife texts like The Book of the Dead. I noticed similarities between what the ancient Egyptians believed happened in the afterlife and the near death experience. In America, is it more acceptable to talk about these experiences?
