The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has stationed surveillance planes in Romania in order to provide a stronger defense on its eastern border and keep an eye on any Russian military operations. This increase of air presence on the eastern border has been enforced since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2014, as an effort to protect NATO allies from possible threats. NATO reports that the aircrafts in Romania have the capability to detect aircraft from hundreds of kilometres away, giving them a greater range of vision.
