What was so special about Abraham?

Abraham is one of the most revered people in the world. His story inspires Christians to build a relationship with God, despite the challenges that may come as a result.

However, Abraham was just a Mesopotamian farmer, albeit a rather rich one. There were scores of people God could have chosen to start a new nation, including some who were already righteous. Why then did He select Abraham?
