Police in Mexico have unearthed 47 sacks containing what they believe are human remains underneath the dance floor of a nightclub.

The grim mass grave is believed to be linked to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the most violent drug gangs in the country.

The 13th-January raid came a shortly after police seized nine alleged members of the cartel.

Police had to use a building-site digger to break up the floor inside the industrial warehouse turned nightclub in Tenango del Valle.

Underneath, they found a secret grave of countless human body parts.

Local media reported that 47 sacks filled with human remains were taken away for forensic examination.

Police do not yet know how many victims there are, nor their age and sex.

Through the cartel suspects, police had been led to several locations, among them the warehouse in Tenango del Valle.

The presumed leader of the cell - Jaime Luis 'El Pozolero' - allegedly kidnapped a woman in Tenancingo in 2022.

Before releasing her in August, he and his henchmen had torn off pieces of her fingers.

He was among six arrested at the time before he escaped and was seized again last week.

In addition to the suspects, police seized several bulletproof vests.

The Public Prosecutor's Office has said the find is strange, as the CJNG is mostly active in Jalisco, Michoacan, Guanajuato, and Zacatecas States.

Mexico State, however, is turf of rival cartel La Familia Michoacana.

Local media speculate that the CJNG moved in after confrontations with authorities in Mexico State left La Familia Michoacana weakened or both cartels agreed to a non-aggression pact.

Officials will now work to identify the victims.
