Putin arrived in St. Petersburg - the president laid flowers on the Day of the breakthrough of the Blockade on the Nevsky Patch.

Vladimir Putin arrived in St Petersburg for events in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Day of the Breakthrough of the Siege of Leningrad. The president has already laid flowers at the Rubezhny Kamen memorial on the Nevsky Patch in the Kirov district of the Leningrad region - Where his father fought during the Great Patriotic War .
The Siege lasted 872 days with German and Finish troops surrounding the city , estimates are over 1 million civilian deaths and the similar numbers for the Soviet Military , German deaths are unknown , but believed to be at least 500,000 .
Many civilians resorted to cannibalism to survive , diseases were rampant with no medical supplies or utilities .
