"Rock and Roll" is the music that became popular in the 1950s and came to define the most important style of pop music. The phrase "rocking and rolling" originally described the movement of a ship on the ocean, but by the early 20th century was used to describe both the spiritual fervor of black church rituals as well as being used as a sexual analogy.
