Ursula von der Leyen is the President of the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, since December 1, 2019. She is the first woman to hold this position. She previously served as the Minister of Defense in Germany from 2013 to 2019. She is a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, and has held various other positions in German and European politics, including as a Member of the European Parliament and as Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in the German government.
