Manatee Park 1/15/2023 (Widescreen)

Filmed in Ft Myers, Florida. This park is located of US 80/Palm Beach Blvd, just east of I-75. It sits next to the FPL power plant, which uses water to cool its equipment, and in turn is released into this discharge channel. The channel is connected to the Orange River, which leads to the Caloosahatchee River, and then on into the Gulf of Mexico. Manatees are mammals, but unlike Whales and Dolphins, they do not have blubber. This is the reason why they need to find warmer waters, once the water temperatures fall below 68 degrees F. If not, they can get hypothermia. The water temperature in the channel this day was 80 degrees F, and the Orange River adjacent to property was at 75 degrees. So, when water temperatures fall below 68 F Manatee Park is a great place to see them. The best times to see are early in the morning, and late in the afternoon from the end of December through February, especially around cold spells.
