The Bay of Pigs invasion, a failed attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro's government in Cuba, was orchestrated by the CIA in 1961.

According to some theories, the CIA wanted the invasion to fail in order to pressure President John F. Kennedy into approving a full scale invasion of Cuba. When the Bay of Pigs invasion failed, Kennedy reportedly said that he "wanted to splinter the C.I.A. in a thousand pieces and scatter it to the winds."

In response, Kennedy immediately fired leading CIA officials, including the Director of the CIA. Some conspiracy theorists believe that the CIA orchestrated Kennedy's assassination in order to preserve its power over the White House.
