A NEW CONTENDER has entered the race to challenge OpenAI’s GPT-3, and build a bigger (and better) AI natural language processing model

AI21 Labs wants to bring text-based artificial intelligence to businesses "in the same way Amazon's AWS did for cloud computing."

AI21 Labs, based in Tel Aviv, has announced that it is planning to release its model, dubbed Jurassic-1 Jumbo, to the public. The language model, which AI21 Labs calls the world’s “most sophisticated language model,” has a staggering 178 billion parameters—beating the OpenAI’s well-known GPT-3, which has 175 billion parameters. (Although it’s still not the biggest: Google said in January that it had trained a model with some 1.6 trillion parameters.)

AI21 Labs’ parameter count could gives it an edge in developing neural networks, which reflect what AI models “learn” from sample data: Jurassic-1 Jumbo can reportedly recognize over 250,000 expressions, words, and phrases, according to VentureBeat, making it bigger than many existing language models.

Such models are trained on an enormous amounts of text, allowing machines to learn connections between words. The software can be immensely useful, allowing machines to auto-generate emails, create more realistic video games, or even code. But these models can also spit out all sorts of toxic text, and are susceptible to various forms of bias.

# The technology can also be repurposed for darker applications; it has previously been used to generate disinformation, as well as phish innocent email users more effectively than humans.

AI companies that are building language models have come up with different ways to address these obstacles. Projects like Eleuther are countering such challenges by paying attention to the (open-source) dataset that it curates, to ensure that it’s well-filtered and diverse. AI21 Labs says that it’s avoiding bias by capping the text that can be generated in its open beta model. Developers that wish to build applications for commercial use will need to apply for custom models, which AI21 Labs says it manually reviews to prevent misuse.

That requirement also serves another purpose: training language models also use an enormous amount of cloud computing power, which in turn, requires millions of dollars worth of cloud computing resources. As a result, computing requirements have so far constrained research. But AI21 is releasing Jurassic-1 in open beta, allowing anyone to sign up and experiment with the model. It also leases its custom models to developers, in a “pay-as-you-go cloud services model,” where AI21 Labs handles how the model is deployed and scaled. The move will open up the market, according to AI21 chief executive Yoav Shoham.

“AI21 Studio makes text-based AI accessible to businesses in the same way AWS did for cloud computing,” says Shoham.

ChatGPT was asked to write funny jokes about Israel, it refused since it could be offensive.

The free artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT was launched less than 30 days ago, and already it has taken the world by storm.

The chatbot was released to the general public for free, for now, as a prototype on November 30 by its creators, the OpenAI research lab, which already made Internet fame thanks to their development of the popular DALL-E AI art generator.

Several analysts have noted with concern that the ChatGPT AI chatbot could potentially pose a risk to careers or industries.

The most-cited issues typically revolve around education and academia, as the chatbot could be used to write essays and other schoolwork, as well as application essays.

There are reasons to be concerned, too. A columnist in The Wall Street Journal used ChatGPT to write a high school AP English essay, which passed examinations by graders.
