Gokokuji Temple in Tokyo. The Tomb of Sosai Mas Oyama

The Gokokuji Temple is the oldest surviving Buddhist temple in Tokyo, established in 1681. The beautiful grounds are sprinkled with many small temple altars and nine delicately designed tea ceremony houses. Gokokuji is a hub for followers of "Cha-do", the tea ceremony. The rooms add a cultural depth to the temple grounds, merging religious and non-religious traditions that highlights Japan's unique aesthetics.

I visited Gokokuji on January 1st, 2023, to pay my respects to Sosai and Mrs Oyama, and experience the peaceful ambience that Gokokuji is known for. It was much busier than usual, with many people coming for their annual "Hatsu Mō-de", their first temple visit of the year. They buy charms and pray for a happy and auspicious year ahead.
