Chief of Police Justin McIntire was shot and killed near Brackenridge Avenue and Morgan Street during a foot pursuit of a wanted subject.

The man escaped the Pennsylvania State Police after a traffic stop the night before for a probation violation involving guns. He left Harrison Township on foot the following morning during a traffic stop. He led police on a two-hour foot pursuit near the Brackenridge-Tartentum border about 2:00 pm. He shot officers in the 900 block of Brackenridge Avenue and 800 block of 3rd Avenue, killing Chief McIntire and wounding a Tarentum Borough officer.

He stole a car and fled to Pittsburgh after shooting both officers. After a vehicle pursuit, he fled into a forested area and opened fire on officers. He died by return fire.

Chief McIntire became Brackenridge Borough Police Department chief four years prior.
