Marvel's upcoming series Secret Invasion needs to be very careful when adapting the storyline from the comics, as the studio is posed with a huge challenge. Barring a brief appearance in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and featuring as a Skrull in disguise during Spider-Man: Far from Home, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury has been MIA for a number of years in the MCU. Secret Invasion is set to bring the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director back to Earth to deal with a very sinister threat. The six-part series will debut on Disney+ in early 2023, and it faces a challenge when dealing with a multitude of characters who could be outed as Skrulls.

The Secret Invasion show will be adapted from Marvel Comics' 2008 crossover storyline of the same name. The plot involves a lengthy invasion of the Earth by the shape-shifting Skrulls, who have the ability to change into any living being down to the DNA. In the comics, the Skrulls were revealed to have replaced many superheroes after the Illuminati confronted the species at the end of the Kree-Skrull War. The MCU adaptation needs to be very careful about which characters it reveals to be secret Skrulls. It would certainly be disappointing if nobody of note turned out to be an imposter, but a lot of MCU plot holes could be opened if too many major Marvel heroes are revealed as Skrull replacements.
