US Shortwave Phone Patches: Military Communications Explained

While listening to the US military frequencies, you might hear airplanes radio in to an HFGCS ground station to request a "phone patch", and you might hear abbrevations such as "DSN", what sound like phone numbers, and weather requests and other apparently non-normal traffic on these frequencies.
