On April 4th, 2022 Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr conducted a traffic stop on Patrick Lyoya. The two soon became involved in a struggle over Officer Schurr's taser. Ultimately, Officer Schurr shot and killed Mr. Lyoya.

Outrage and protests followed the release of video footage of the incident. Calls for for Officer Schurr to be fired and prosecuted were loud and numerous.
