Carrots contain a variety of dietary carotenoids, which are known for their antioxidant properties and ability to reduce free radicals in the body. For example, one study found that current smokers who did not consume carrots had three times the risk of developing lung cancer compared with those who ate carrots more than once a week. In a 2011 study, carrot juice extract was shown to kill leukemia cells and inhibit their progression. In addition, research has shown that natural compounds in vegetables of the carrot family, such as polyacetylenes, can have beneficial effects in controlling inflammation and reducing cancer growth in animals. Carrots also contain the anti-cancer compound falcarinol, which has been shown to reduce tumors in rats by a third. Some studies have also suggested that diets rich in beta-carotene may play a protective role against prostate cancer in men.
