Done deal: Rangers announce Alex Kpakpe transfer after exit from Chelsea
Rangers have confirmed the signing of youngster Alex Kpakpe for their academy on Tuesday (10 January) who has penned a contract at the club until the summer of 2023.

The 18-year-old young defender left Chelsea back in November [The Atheltic, 13 December], and played in a bounce game for the Bears.
His formative years at the London club have been hampered by illness and injuries, but he can hope to make a fresh start at Rangers’ academy.
The Bears also confirmed the signings of Jacob Pazikas, Leyton Grant, Findlay Curtis and Jamie Newton.
“Rangers are today delighted to announce a number of new Academy contracts. Jacob Pazikas until summer 2025, Leyton Grant and Findlay Curtis until Summer 2024, Jamie Newton and Alex Kpakpe until Summer 2023. Congratulations, lads,” wrote Rangers B and Academy.

Brilliant

Kpakpe had a nightmare time at Chelsea where his growth and development was severely hampered by injury and illness.

He left the Blues back in November and played in a bounce game back to impress the Gers. There were talks that he could join as an academy signing, and the club have taken him on board.

The Bears have a long tradition of adding quality players to their academy ranks, and credit should be given to Ross Wilson for securing the deals. It’s brilliant work behind from Wilson the scenes, and let’s hope these players can represent the senior side in years to come.
While Michael Beale is reportedly looking to bolster the first-team squad, it is equally important for the club to take great care of their academy system.

The likes of Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey earned Rangers a lot of money in transfer fees, and the club should encourage this model in the long run.

It is a fresh start for Kpakpe and let’s hope he can get rid of his injury problems behind.
