The Second Seminole War of 1835 was a brutal and bloody conflict that began with the brutal massacre of Major Francis Dade and his troops. On December 28, 1835, Major Dade and more than 100 soldiers were on their way from Fort Brooke (near Tampa) to Fort King (near present-day Ocala) when they were ambushed by some 180 Seminoles and their allies. All but three of the soldiers were killed in the battle. This massacre became known as the Dade Massacre and marked the official start of the Second Seminole War.
