Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy, this work has a variety of controversial scenes, loaded with symbolism, frequent references to historical figures and parodies of contemporaries. Recommended for adult readers.
In a world enslaved by an Ayatollah with the mystical power of God, divided into three territories under the control of his theocratic dictatorship, a 12-year-old Ayyan Alli escapes from an arranged marriage with an abusive man and must leave Purgatory in the company of scholars Ibn-Sina and Ibn-Rushd, as the romantic relationship that unites the men becomes public. However, there is only one place to hide from the Caliphate: Hell, also known as America.
In the land of eternal punishment Ayyan will learn about violence and sadism, war and erudition, ambition and friendship, redemption, and love. But it won't be until she finds the manipulative Serpent of Eden, in possession of Moses' legendary burning bush, that Ayyan will get the tool needed to rescue her adoptive sister Juana Inés when she is captured by the clutches of horror. The proverbial creature will offer to teach her the mysterious Language of the Creator and unleash the divine power trapped inside the Tree of Knowledge. But only if she agrees to the suicide mission of climbing the Tower of Paradise and murdering the omnipotent God.
The ultimate sedition has begun.
