Nature photographer Paul Nicklen (@PaulNicklen) lived one of the most special encounters humans can experience.

On one of his dives in the warm waters off the coast of Tonga, he discovered a devout humpback mother waiting patiently for her baby to grow and strengthen up for the long journey back to their feeding areas in Antarctica.

“The whale song of a distant male filled the waters around me as I descended to the position to record the moment. I filmed as long as I could, quietly said goodbye, and floated gently to the surface so as not to disturb them. There are some dives where I held my breath, the experience is so mesmerizing that I completely forgot about the burning sensation in my lungs, this time was one of them," Paul says.
