Performance Notes:
Elgar composed his fourteen “Variations on an Original Theme,” now commonly known as “Enigma Variations,” during 1898-99. He later wrote regarding his inspiration for the piece that it was a series of “sketches of the composer’s friends.” While the entire work is among the stalwarts of the orchestral repertoire, the Adagio variation became especially well-loved having been performed often at funerals and solemn occasions. “Nimrod” references the Biblical figure, who was a “mighty hunter,” and Elgar’s close friend, Augustus J. Jaeger, whose German last name translates to “hunter.” Once, when the composer had become extremely frustrated and ready to give up his efforts as a composer, Jaeger persuaded him to continue his work.
