HOW I MOVED MY ENTIRE LIBRARY from Illinois to Tennessee

I'll show you how I moved my entire library from Illinois to Tennessee--except for the driving part. You're spared 10 hours of hell. But this video has all the packing and unpacking you could want. And probably more than you want. I share my tips and tactics for protecting books for long journeys.

Some of my rules:
1. Save your shipping boxes! If you buy direct from publishers, keep the boxes before your move.
2. If you collect books from Suntup or Lividian, write the name of the book on the shipping boxes so you can reuse those boxes for those books--form-fitted foam is the ultimate way to transport books!
3. If you don't have form-fitted foam, then only two books per box.
4. Wrap books with bubble wrap--being sure to place a layer between books--and then tape securely so there's no friction or movement during transport.
5. Create a significant "buffer zone" between the books and the shipping box with packing peanuts or newspaper or even old t-shirts and rags--whatever you have that can absorb impact without transferring the impact to the books.
6. Handle the books yourself! You know what's in the box and what it's worth to you. Other people will just toss the boxes around. They hate you!
7. If you can't handle the books yourself, then use a lot more packing materials and create bigger "buffer zones" to ensure even the most careless mover won't harm your collection.
8. Use a rack or shelving to place packed boxes on the moving truck or storage container. It's important to not stack heavy boxes onto your book boxes. A shelf system will take all the weight off your boxes.
9. Once the rack or shelving unit is filled with boxes, wrap it in plastic wrap so the whole shelving unit is contained.
10. strap that unit to the wall of the truck or storage container.
11. Once you move, unpack the books as quickly as possible--plastic wrap can trap moisture and changes in humidity can be a huge problem.
