Should I Take Vitamin D? @jenntrepeck #quicktipepisode
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. It is also produced when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D is essential for many body functions and is particularly important for the maintenance of healthy bones and teeth. It is also involved in immune system function and may have other roles in the body. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to a loss of bone density, which can contribute to osteoporosis and fractures (broken bones). Severe vitamin D deficiency can also lead to other diseases. In children, it can cause rickets. Rickets is a rare disease that causes the bones to become soft and bend. Sun exposure is an easy and efficient way for the body to get vitamin D. The skin makes vitamin D when it is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation from the sun. However, it is important to be safe when in the sun and to get enough vitamin D without increasing the risk of skin cancer.
