10 Incredible Animal Migrations You Won't Believe
The great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras embark on a journey through the savannas of Tanzania and Kenya in search of food and water. This massive herd faces numerous challenges along the way, including predators, drought, and crossing rivers filled with crocodiles.
The arctic tern migration. These small birds travel an incredible distance of up to 50,000 miles per year as they fly from their breeding grounds in the Arctic to their wintering grounds in the Southern Hemisphere and back again. This epic journey takes them from the coldest regions on earth to the warm tropical waters of the South Atlantic and back.
The Pacific salmon migration. These fish travel thousands of miles from the open ocean to the freshwater rivers and streams where they were born, to spawn and reproduce. Despite facing numerous obstacles, including dams and other man-made barriers, many of these salmon make it back to their birthplace to continue the cycle of life.
The monarch butterfly migration. Every year, millions of these beautiful insects travel from the United States and Canada to the forests of central Mexico, where they spend the winter. The monarchs make this incredible journey, covering up to 3,000 miles, despite having a lifespan of only a few months.
The caribou migration. These majestic animals travel up to 3,000 miles each year as they search for food and shelter. The caribou's journey takes them through some of the most remote and rugged landscapes on earth, including the tundra of the Arctic and the mountains of Alaska.
The gray whale migration. These massive creatures travel over 10,000 miles each year as they migrate between their feeding grounds in the Arctic and their breeding grounds in the warm waters off the coast of Mexico. Along the way, they must navigate through treacherous seas and avoid predators like killer whales.
The flamingo migration. These beautiful birds travel thousands of miles each year as they follow the rains and search for food. Flamingos are found in many parts of the world, including Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, and they often travel in large flocks.
The polar bear migration. As the ice caps melt and the Arctic becomes more inhospitable, polar bears are forced to travel further and further in search of food. These powerful predators can travel over 1,000 miles in a single season as they follow the seals and other prey that sustain them.
The elephant migration. These majestic animals travel vast distances in search of food and water, often covering over 500 miles in a single year. Elephants are known for their incredible memories, and they are able to navigate their way through complex landscapes and return to the same watering holes year after year.
The narwhal migration. These elusive whales travel thousands of miles each year as they follow the changing patterns of the Arctic ice. Narwhals are known for their unique tusks, which are actually modified teeth, and they are found in the cold waters of the far north.
