Based on a true story, Peter (Will Smith), a slave during the height of the Civil War, flees a plantation in Louisiana after he was whipped within an inch of his life. He has to outwit the cold-blooded bounty hunter, Jim Fassel (Ben Foster), and the unforgiving swamps on a torturous journey north to meet up with Lincoln's Union army.
