President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday (January 6) Ukraine was united in belief of victory, addressing the nation in a Christmas message.

Standing with a decorated tree, and candles in the background the president said that the usual Christmas traditions could not be observed , such as wearing light clothes.

"Trouble came to our home on February 24, 2022, so since then we are not in white clothes and we are fighting against black forces," said Zelensky.

President Vladimir Putin ordered a 36-hour ceasefire from midday on Friday to observe Russian Orthodox Christmas.

Ukraine said it had no intention to stop fighting, rejecting the purported truce as a stunt by Moscow to buy time to reinforce troops that have taken heavy losses this week.
