With injury keeping Antonio Colak out of Mick Beale’s plans since the former assistant coach returned to Rangers in November, the rather unsettling prediction Kris Boyd made regarding the Croatian’s future at Ibrox is yet to be proven right or wrong.
Colak, Boyd fears, is about as well-suited to Beale’s preferred style of play as Will Ferrell is to a gritty underground crime thriller.
“For me, (Colak) is the best finisher at the club,” the Rangers legend tells the Scottish Sun. “But I do fear for him going forward under the new manager. Colak could be a victim of the way Michael Beale’s Rangers will play.
And, say what you want about Lyndon Dykes, no one could ever accuse QPR’s Scotland international of missing a ‘presence’. An old-school, Duncan Ferguson-esque throwback of a number nine; Dykes has just six goals in 22 Championship starts this season but that has not deterred Beale from a potential January raid on his old employers.
“Dykes is definitely someone that Rangers are keen on,” explains GiveMeSport reporter Dean Jones. “Beale is so keen on him.”
Dykes had Gerrard and Beale reaching for the Aspirin during his time north of the border at Livingston, the fiery frontman’s irrepressible performances against the Glasgow giants earning him plenty of admirers at Ibrox. Dykes was a Rangers target before joining QPR for £2 million back in 2020 (Daily Record). Beale’s return is likely to see that interest revisited.
“I liked the bully he was up in Scotland. The player who bashed into players a little bit and got around. He has done well, coming down here,” Beale said after finally getting his mitts on Dykes at Loftus Road.
“I’m looking forward to working with Lyndon and helping him reach his full potential. I think he’s had a really fast rise and I think the best is still to come.”
When it comes to sticking the ball in the back of the net, there’s no competition between Colak and Dykes. But, as Boyd noted, a centre-forward in Dykes’ system must do more than simply loiter around the penalty area waiting for chances to come his way.
And Dykes’ superior all-round game, should he arrive at Ibrox, is what could give him the edge over the classy-but-rather one-dimensional Croatian.
