baby turtle’s life are called the ‘lost years?

Only 1 in 1000 turtle hatchlings make it past adulthood. 🐢 Did you know that the first few years of a baby turtle’s life are called the ‘lost years? That’s because the time between hatching and returning to shallow coastal waters to forage is incredibly challenging to study! During the lost years at sea (which can be up to 20), they face many dangers. This includes entanglement in fishing gear, the loss of nesting and feeding sites to coastal development, and ocean pollution, including plastic. The turtles in this video have hatched on Corona Island. They’re taken care of for their first year of life and then released into the ocean, giving them a better fighting chance at survival. 💪🏽 Have you ever seen a turtle in the wild? 🤩
