The Ukrainian ambassador to Australia has called in police over concerns for his safety after the pro-Russian YouTube star known as “Aussie Cossack” shared the diplomat’s mobile phone number with his followers, resulting in dozens of abusive calls and messages.

Simeon Boikov aired ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko’s mobile number on Thursday night before prank-calling him “live” on his YouTube show, which has 150,000 followers.

Mr Boikov, who vocally supports Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, made the hoax call as “Bill from Hunters Hill” after the ambassador urged Tennis Australia to reconsider banning Russian and Belarusian players from the Australian Open.

NSW Police are seeking Mr Boikov’s arrest after the NSW Parole Authority issued a revocation of parole warrant for him.

Mr Boikov told The Australian he had not been made aware of this. He denied asking any of his supporters to call the ambassador and said he was not worried about police looking into the matter.

The 32-year-old is reported to have sought refuge in the Russian consulate in Sydney and to have asked for political asylum after he was charged with assaulting an elderly man at a Ukrainian rally in December.

Mr Boikov would not confirm on Friday whether he was in the consulate but said he had applied for Russian citizenship.

Video taken at the protest shows the 72-year-old man stumbling backwards down steps and landing heavily following a scuffle with Mr Boikov.

Mr Boikov was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and granted conditional bail and said he was confident he would beat the charge by claiming “self defence”.

The YouTube video titled “Ukrainian Ambassador prank over Tennis Australia ban for Russians” has so far been watched by 13,000 people.

Mr Myroshnychenko said he has been bombarded with about 30 phone calls, text messages and voicemails from people he believes are Mr Boikov’s supporters since Thursday when the Australia spoke to him early on Friday.

“(Mr Boikov has) released my phone number to his network who started calling me, harassing me, intimidating me with insults and threats,” Mr Myroshnychenko said.

He said some callers were “more sophisticated” in their approach while others simply swore at him: “Some are all f..k, f..k, f..k, you know”. One sent a text saying “Leave athletes alone. We are watching” while another wrote “U Ukrainian d..khead why aren’t you u letting Russians in the tennis, Hitler did the exact same thing u racist pr..k”.

Mr Myroshnychenko has since reported the matter to the Australian Federal Police. The AFP said they were aware of the matter, and were working with the diplomatic mission.

Asked if he was concerned for his safety, Mr Myroshnychenko replied: “Of course”.

“Of course it’s uncomfortable, it’s a distraction.”

When The Australian spoke to Mr Boikov on Friday, he said: “I don’t know any of the people that rang him. I didn’t ask anyone to ring him. Maybe it’s paranoia”.

Mr Boikov shared what appeared a statement to media by Mr Myroshnychenko titled: Australian Open Needs to Ban Players from Russia.”

At the bottom of the statement was Mr Myroshnychenko’s mobile phone number, which Mr Boikov pointed to with a red arrow graphic.

“Now he’s all huff and puff and he’s all angry about the Australian open. But what he did on the statement that he released, he released his mobile number. There it is there on the screen,” Mr Boikov said in the video.

“So the Ukrainian ambassador’s mobile number makes its way into the Aussie Cossack’s sphere of influence, you could say … Let me know in the comments section what we should do next. Should we give him a call?” he asked his viewers.

He then called Mr Myroshnychenko on loud speaker claiming he was “Bill from Hunters Hill” who ran a tennis association who was supportive of the ambassador’s stance on banning Russian players in the Australian Open. Mr Myroshnychenko picked Mr Boikov’s distinct voice after about three minutes.
