Today’s question: The Letter of the Law vs. the Spirit

I was talking about the Bible to my mother the other day and we "argued" about the letter of the word being different from the spirit of the word. I thought they are different from each other. She said they are the same God made a point of saying exactly what he meant. If that's true then creation happened in 6 literal 24 hour days. And many other things. God says don't kill, but suicide is not by mans law considered murder. Is the spirit of the word different from the letter if so how do we know? What does everyone else think? And what does the Bible say?
