Apple has been penalized by the French data privacy regulator, the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (CNIL), to the tune of approximately $8.5 million for the practice of personalizing advertisements on the App Store. The CNIL asserted that Apple neglected to acquire approval from iPhone owners who updated their devices to iOS 14.6 before collecting and utilizing their data for the purpose of targeting ads. The CNIL also noted that the settings for ad targeting were "pre-checked by default". This means users had to manually deselect the settings in order to prevent the collection of their data, a process which requires more effort and is less likely to be completed by users.
