Why was Britteny Griner Detained at the Russian Airport?

Britteny Grinner is an American professional basketball player for the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is the only NCAA basketball player to score 2000 points and block 500 shots. But she was in the news for other reasons than her game. She was detained by the Russian Federal Customs Service (FCS) in February 2022 for carrying hashish oil with her. She is in custody as carrying the oil is a criminal offense in Russia. In addition, she was in the news in 2020 for protesting and refusing to be on the court while the national anthem was played during game openers.

Another American, Michael Fay, was sentenced to six strokes of the cane in Singapore in 1994 as he was caught for theft of road signs and vandalizing 18 cars over 10 days in September 1993.

Maria Exposto was detained in Kuala Lumpur airport in December 2014 for carrying more than 1kg of crystal Methamphetamine. She was a drug mule but was still sentenced to death; drug trafficking in Malaysia is a serious crime, and the death sentence is the only punishment. She appeared in court and was freed after nearly five years in jail and 18 months on death row.
Considering these cases, people should check for the rules and regulations before traveling to other countries.
