That one time I had just retired from active duty Air Force on April Fools Day ‘22 (kek) and what a great hobby fan editing was to have recently fallen into! Having absolutely no issues finding ways to occupy all that retiree free time, I decided to dive a bit deeper into the world of fan editing (at least until my wife inevitably wants my attention or the hedges trimmed or something).

For this, my inaugural and celebratory film edit, I will be taking the unaltered audio from the 1977 Rankin/Bass animation and playing it behind the matching scenes from Peter Jackson’s trilogy for a fun new Hobbit experience with a 77 minute runtime. Since it’s very difficult and time consuming (impossible at times, in fact) to match the audio for lip sync, I decided to do the best I could (without killing myself trying to reverse engineer lip reading) and then go with a dubbed Grindhouse/“edited for TV” look to account for those “special” moments that just won’t sync up - and I rather like the outcome so far to be honest. This one will [obviously I think] not likely come with any change log beyond that description.

The attached video is just a quick 6.5 minute draft, but I think I’m on the right track. BTW - RBG EDIT...that’s “Rankin/Bass Grindhouse”, not Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I have a lot more that I want to change with this footage as well, to include a better film grade overlay, new and personally customized fan edit disclaimer cards (I shamelessly repurposed for the draft) and re-doing the “Greatest Adventure” tiled intro (which is pretty spoilery and I also repurposed that part from YouTube). I do want to make all this my own work after all, to the extent that I can using a Hollywood film source anyway.

Presenting the announcement of the work in progress that will be called:
