Peora, Il Officer(s) involved shooting

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting near Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Peoria Monday night.

Just after 10 p.m. Monday Night, Peoria police responded to a shot spotter alert near Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Peoria. Police closed part of MacArthur Highway and McBean Street due to this incident. The Peoria Police Department, Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, AMT, and Peoria Fire were all on the scene. It has now been confirmed that it was a police officer-involved shooting, and that one person is dead.

When officers arrived, they were involved in a shooting of an unidentified person, and that person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Nobody wants to pull the trigger. So when officers are involved, and the community is involved, it’s always a sad day,” Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria said regarding Monday night’s incident.

In a statement released to WMBD by Peoria Police spokesperson Semone Roth, she stated that Illinois State Police are now on the scene and are handling the investigation going forward. Information regarding the identity of the victim and the cause of death will be released by Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood. Roth added that there will be no further comments from Peoria Police regarding this incident.
