Piilani means ascend or ascent to heaven. Hale means house. Heiau means temple.

The temple is the largest in all of Hawaii and speculated to be the largest in Polynesia

The stone foundation of the temple is massive covering 3 acres and standing over 3 stories high

The stone foundation of the temple was covered in jungle up until it was cleared in the late 1990’s

Historians estimate construction of the temple began in the 12th century

Completion of the temple is estimated to have taken 300 years

The reining King here was also named Piilani

The stone bricks were quarried near Hana which is 7 miles away

This means it was a 14 mile roundtrip to transport the bricks by hand or boat

Its speculated that the land here must have a very special energy for the Hawaiians to have chosen to build the temple at this site

Historians consider it a mystery as to the purpose and function of the temple. This can be attributed to the fact that the Hawaiian spiritual culture which includes philosophy, practice, language, hula dance and chant was initially outlawed essentially erasing most of the spiritual culture.

Although the purpose and function of the temple is considered a mystery, I have studied the history of world spiritual traditions and speculate that the temple may have been used for the purpose of enlightenment and spiritual liberation also known as transfiguration.

This was the secret and most valued knowledge amongst the ancient cultures. I have written an article on this topic titled Alchemy: The Science of Enlightenment that you can find here
