Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI's last words before he died Saturday were, "Lord, I love you," according to his longtime secretary.
Archbishop Georg Gaenswein attributed the statements to a nurse assisting the 95-year-old and heard them soon before his death on New Year's Eve.
Gaenswein said the nurse remembered Benedict making the brief speech at 3 a.m. before he died later that morning.
"Benedict XVI murmured in Italian, 'Lord, I love you,' in a low but definite voice," Gaenswein told the Vatican's official media on Sunday.
"I wasn't there at the time, but the nurse afterward told me about it.
