Transcript:

Paul: The God that Jordan Peterson was describing was quite different from the God that Sam Harris was complaining about. And what I think we are coming to sort of at the end of modernity is a reassessment of what exactly the revolutionary way in which the Hebrew scriptures began to talk about it as compared to its neighbors.

This God in the Old Testament, who sometimes comes in and is a narrative character that Abraham can talk to, but other times you have this passive sense which looks a little bit more like what the Greeks tried to represent as fake, getting an Arenac element to their cosmology rather than an Agentic element.

Neal: So divine providence.

Paul: Exactly. There's this divine passive that you find in many religious texts. Will it happen? Well, that must be the will of God. And of course, Calvinists are right in there because, you know, the old Calvinist joke, the Calvinist falls down the stairs, says, God, I got that over with because everything's determined.
