Struggles With Off Grid Arizona Living On Our High Desert Homestead

In today's video we are continuing to work on the chicken coop tower foundation and we are also going to share all about our struggles with off grid Arizona living on our high desert homestead and what you should consider if you are going to live rural.

We are Douglas and Keri and we recently quit our jobs, sold everything, and in September of 2022 we took a leap of faith and moved onto our off grid homestead property in the high desert of Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our off grid homestead property with our two rebels, Willow & Zoey and our 16 y/o kitty, Boo.

The chicken coop foundation continues to go up and today we are building the door frame for the main entrance. We used 2” x 12” boards for the frame and applied the Shou Sugi Ban. We will be custom building the door that will fit into this frame so that it’s tall enough for Douglas to easily walk through at 6’5” tall :)

One of the things we also wanted to share is our experience moving from the city to the country. Moving from a densely populated area to a rural area has had its challenges! We have found that making that adjustment has been a big of a struggle for us, but we are getting by :) With the cost of gasoline and the length of the drive, it’s not practical to be going to town all the time for supplies, but we also have the challenge of living in an extremely small space with limited storage which includes a small refrigerator, micro-sized freezer, and a very small pantry.

So, how do we manage? Well, we make lots of lists and try to squeeze all of our errand and supply runs into one trip. Since we are living completely off the grid with no utilities, that means we also have to plan around hauling our own trash. The great part about that though is that we only end up spending about $5 a month to dispose of our waste and that’s pretty reasonable!

Moving from the “city” we gave up a lot of conveniences like having everything close and being able to order what ever we wanted whenever we wanted, like groceries and meals. Amazon even delivered a lot quicker! It’s been a bit of an adjustment to not have those conveniences so close, but the good news is we are planning ahead and eating at home a lot more than we ever have before. It’s just not convenient to run into town for dinner any more!

So, those are just a few things to consider if you are thinking about moving to a rural location. The question of whether it’s worth it…It ABSOLUTELY is! Our stress levels have decreased significantly and we are not missing the traffic, congestion, or stress of living in a densely populated area. Yes, of course there are some trade offs, but the peace and quiet we get to experience out here is most definitely worth it. We really feel like we are living more intentionally and we are healthier for it!

Hope you enjoyed the video and we always appreciate a like and subscribe if you’re finding value in what we are sharing :)
