The Telnyashka is worn by the Russian Airborne or "VDV" as a distinctive mark of their perceived elite status.

The shirt's was originally a navy uniform, but gained fame when the Russian Naval infantry fought during World War II.

Russian General General Vasily Margelov chose the Telnyashka for the distinctive unform of the airborne forces during the modernization of the VDV after World War II.

Today, the wearing of the Telnyashka in Russia is considered a to be a sign of masculinity, although the reputation of the Telnyashka has not seemed to hold up with the VDV in Ukraine.
