According to a union representing 16,000 nurses, a strike will take place in 10 days if a new contract is not reached. They are demanding better pay and working conditions.
Nancy Hagans, President of the NY State Nurses Association, explained, "We need to have enough nurses to care for our patients. You can not have a nurse working in a medical surgical unit where she should have 5 patients and that nurse is taking care of 12 patients. There are nurses in the emergency room that are caring for 20 patients”.
