To understand the meaning of the word you have o know what the interaction between Eve and the Serpent was. The first thing out of his mouth was “Ya has God not said”? in the form of a contentious question. Then he whispered in her ear and cast a spell on her and then he seduces her.
The word Serpent is a description of what he did, he used divine enchantment to seduce Eve.

Ezekiel 28:14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

The Hebrew is describing a role or occupation of satan; He divined into Eves ear “Is it not said?” This is not a snake that was possessed by satan but it was satan himself in his first role of this age. He also plays the role as the serpent by casting a flood of lies after the woman in Revelation 12.
He talked Eve into having sex with him. Cain was the result. Wait until he comes back as the false messiah people will be going goo goo gaa gaa over him.

The Greek rendition is almost saying the same thing, satan is a snake in the figurative sense like we would call an unscrupulous character a snake. Don’t under estimate him he is sharper and more cunning than any human.
The devil is a divine liar with super natural abilities. He will cast a spell on much of the world and they will believe he is god.

Notice the connection to what satan does and who he is in some of these examples. He uses all of these occupations to steal the souls of as many as he can. All of these roles require super natural ability and deception is his main tool.
