Never talk to the Police! All lines of questioning from police are to assist them in looking for a crime to make an arrest. Even if you are 100% innocent, especially if you are innocent, DO NOT talk to the Police! Their job is not to find innocence, but evidence of a crime. The more you speak to them the more ammo they have to build a case against you by twisting your words. Always refuse to answer any of their questions.

You have THE RIGHT to remain silent! Using that right can NEVER be used against you, but your words can! By politely declining to answer any questions, you will likely find the officer continue to poke and prod with trick questions trying to get you to speak to them, keep repeating the line "I don't answer questions". Eventually they will give up, walk away or write you the ticket they were going to give you anyway. Their questions are a tactic used to build evidence, or catch you in a lie when they have no other reason to arrest you. You are under no legal obligation to answer any of their questions. If they had evidence you committed a crime, they would have arrested you from the getgo.

You cannot talk your way out of an arrest. If they arrest you, stay quiet and have your lawyer talk to the Cops. By not answering questions you are vastly more likely to see the case dropped later. Teach that to your kids as well. Cops, on or off duty, ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS! They are Government agents and should be treated as such, ALWAYS!
