An Alternative Viewpoint Is the Russian SMO legal or not

Sergey Lavrov said the Russian SMO was legal under International Law and that Russia started the SMO to protect and assist the newly created Donbass Republics. I believed him until I looked at the map again.
Naturally the West considers the Russian SMO as an Invasion.
