California deputy shot, killed by man with 'extensive criminal history' during traffic stop

A California sheriff's deputy was shot and killed Thursday afternoon during a traffic stop, which led to a massive manhunt for the suspect and resulted in him being fatally shot by authorities.

In a news conference Thursday night, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco confirmed Deputy Isaiah Cordero was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Jurupa Valley. He said the department is "deeply heartbroken" over the loss.

"He certainly embodied our motto of service before self," Bianco said of the 32-year-old deputy, who was hired by Riverside County as a correctional deputy in May 2014.
