The Best of Austrian Composers - Mozart, Strauss, Schubert, Hummel, and Schmidt.

One could claim that some of the best Classical and Romantic Composers have originated from Austria, in particular Vienna. With some either calling Vienna their home, or whether they were born there.

The infamous Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, composing over 600 works in a range of symphonic, chamber, operatic, and choral pieces.
The entire Strauss family all have musical talents of their own; however, Johann I (Senior) and Johann II (Junior) perhaps stand out for their wonderful waltz’s, in particular Johann II stamped his claim to fame with ‘The Blue Danube’, among many other memorable waltz’s.
Franz Schubert is best remembered for his chamber music and the masterful composition of the poem – Ave Maria! Even Beethoven called Schubert “Truly, the spark of divine genius resides in this Schubert!"

Johann Nepomuk Hummel is most noted for his numerous piano works, many sacred works, and short theatrical pieces, minuets and dances for orchestras.

Franz Schmidt was born in Slovakia, but is most known for his residence in Austria. He had great influence throughout Europe, right up to his death in 1939. However, due to those that listened to his music at the time, he was lumped into history’s books as a composer that should be forgotten. His talents perhaps shone the most in his orchestra pieces, and in particular the romantic opera ‘Notre Dame’ – loosely based on the novel ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’.

I hope you enjoy my pick of The Best of Austrian Composers - Mozart, Strauss, Schubert, Hummel, and Schmidt.
