The frigid temperatures in Texas last week proved to be too intense for some wildlife. At one colony under Waugh Bridge in Houston, the tiny bats plummeted 15 to 30 feet to the pavement. Suffering hypothermic shock, the bats might have perished on the pavement. The Houston Humane Society plucked hundreds off the pavement where they’d fallen from their roosts during freezing conditions and rehabilitated them with an incubator. As temperatures warm up, hundreds of fully recovered bats are being released back into the wild. By December 26th, the Houston Humane Society rescue group had saved 1,544 bats.
